United in Support: Call for Protection of Immigrant Families

We come from many different backgrounds, so we want to make clear at Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco, we stand with all parents and caregivers in the immigrant communities of the Bay Area and beyond. We urge local government officials to do everything in their power to protect the mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunt and uncles and any caregivers whose hard work our local communities depend on. And again to our incredible public school districts, we urge school officials to implement policies and procedures to ensure immigration agents do not enter our schools.

The U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Department of Educations of Office for Civil Rights, which addresses protections against discrimination based on national origin and immigration status in public schools. This resource has been shared on our social media channels, and we urge community leaders to share it widely with families and school staff. Additionally, we must address the challenges faced by school districts, particularly urban ones like SFUSD, which are overwhelmed with budget deficits and staffing shortages. These operational challenges can hinder the district's ability to protect vulnerable communities.

Students with intellectual disabilities have the fundamental right to celebrate their accomplishments alongside their peers. Yet, many are being denied the opportunity to participate in commencement—a pivotal moment that recognizes their resilience, hard work, and achievements. Excluding these students from such ceremonies not only diminishes their voices but also undermines the principles of inclusion and equality that are vital to our democracy.

Equitable grading is more than just "being nice."

Since we are about our children lets share the truth about equitable grading. It's about creating a system that accurately reflects student learning, reduces bias, and promotes success by demonstrating skill proficiency for all students, regardless of their background or learning style. The pilot ensured a more accurate reflection of knowledge and skills, reduced stress and anxiety, increased motivation, and improved academic outcomes. Additionally, equitable grading practices are likely to benefit our students who tend to have the highest percentage of enrollment.
