Parent Voices - PPS-SF Leader Board Member Martina Ramos Shares Her Nine Years of PPS-SF Experience

Martina Ramos - PPS-SF -Leader Board Member

Martina Ramos - PPS-SF -Leader Board Member

Here at Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco (PPS-SF) our mission is to promote the fundamental value of public education and pursue the success of every public school experience by sharing knowledge, bridging communities, and informing policy. We know that parents and families know their communities best. The Parent Leader Board Program helps ensure that we are providing the support that parents and families need across San Francisco for student and family success.

The goal of this program is to expand the reach of our services and with the input of our Leader Board Members, we aim to make our services more accessible and truly representative of parent voices.

Martina Ramos has been with PPS-SF for nine years!

Martina began her journey with PPS-SF through our different workshops, when her only child started school. This quickly turned into Martina becoming a volunteer once she saw how useful the trainings were for her as a Latina parent new to the US education system. She owned the role by supporting trainings, reaching out to parents, and engaging with families at workshops. The desire to help families at her child’s school led Martina and her husband to become ELAC (English Language Learners Advisory Committee) lead members. As ELAC leaders, they were able to support the budget decisions of the program and work with the Principal and other parents to bring effective student learning programs and increase student participation.

Martina later became a Family Parent Leader where she provided more direct support to families. Through this role she helped disseminate information to families, actively participates in PPS-SF parent workshops, and expands support for parents to get involved in the schools and advocate for student’s success.

Six months ago, with a goal to continue learning and helping families, Martina Ramos became a PPS-SF Leader Board Member.  As a Leader Board Member she continues to support her community, her child, and public education. As a face of PPS-SF, she is able to further encourage parents and families to engage in their child's education, school community, and San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD). Martina finds great value in this experience, is grateful for all she has learned with PPS-SF, and for the opportunity to help other families. We at PPS-SF are grateful for her many years of dedication, support, and collaboration.

PPS-SF is like an extended branch of the school district. SFUSD does not have the same access to families of SF.
