Black History Month Energy, All Year
February is almost here and as spring starts doing its thing, its a good reminder to hold ourselves to the commitments many people made when there was a resurgence of Black Lives Matters protests in June of 2020. Black history is American history, not acknowledging that is untruthful. SFUSD has created this amazing resource guide that has a variety of resources for every age group. We encourage people to keep up the Black History Month energy all year long, here are a few events to check out this month.
The San Francisco Public Library has lots of virtual programming happening as part of it’s More Than A Month celebration. There will be musical performances, presentations, readings, and book clubs, just to name a few of the events. To see the entire list of events, click here.
The 11th Annual Bayview Black History Month and Lunar New Year Celebration will be going virtual on February 19 from 3-4 PM. You can join through their facebook event here, or by watching on their youtube live here.
Black Lives Matter at School is having a week of action from February 1-5. To learn more, click here.
Manny’s will be hosting a ‘Purpose of Power’ book club every Wednesday at 5 PM. There will be a different guest speaker each week culminating with Black Lives Matter co-founder and author Alicia Garza on February 25. KQED will be hosting a drive in and online debut viewing of the documentary film When the Water Gets Deep at Fort Mason on February 23 from 8-10 PM. When MC Karega Bailey loses his own brother in a shooting, his grief makes him sick with revenge and hopelessness, and he is left questioning his own message of hope and peace. Turning to his faith, family, and writing, Bailey finds his voice and purpose again. With the collective BE-IMAGINATIVE, Bailey and his bandmates help lead retreats for mothers whose children have been taken by gun violence. This work prepares Bailey and his wife, Felicia as they are tested with another profound personal loss. To learn more and to register, click here.
Youth Art Exchange is hosting a Textile Earring Workshop with Marisol Catchings. Join Marisol at this free two hour workshop, for ages 12+, to learn how to craft easy-to-make Aztec and African textile earrings. There are 20 spots and participants will receive a zoom link once they sign up. The Oakland Museum of California looks at Black power movements in California and the Bay Area through their exhibit “Black Power”. You can look at the exhibit online, which features furniture, photographs, buttons, posters, and many other cool artifacts.
Black Joy Parade is hosting The Black Joy Treasure Hunt in Oakland! Once you’ve read the rules and submitted your name and email here, you’ll be presented with the first clue. The clue will hint at a specific Black gem such as a landmark, art piece or business in Oakland. Once you find that location, scan the QR code at the location with your phone camera to be presented with the next clue. Repeat this process until you reach the final location. After scanning the QR code at the final location, you’ll be rewarded with a prize. The Treasure Hunt is city wide, so we do recommend doing the route with a vehicle. Happy hunting!
