TITLE: African American Community Outreach Coordinator

LOCATION: San Francisco, CA

REPORTS TO: Director of Programs

HOURS: This is a 75% time position (approximately 30 hours per week) during the school year, with 6 weeks of unpaid summer break. This year's break is June 18–July 30, 2018. Regular evening work is required. This position requires travel to various sites within San Francisco.

COMPENSATION: Starting salary is $30,000–$32,500 annually. Medical benefits, cell phone stipend, paid holidays, and generous vacation time are included.

Position Summary

The African American Community Outreach Coordinator (OC) supports San Francisco families in the African American community by educating, engaging, and connecting parents, families, and community members in support of San Francisco public education. The African American Community OC’s  priority is supporting parents, families, and community members to become active agents for excellent education opportunities for all children in San Francisco's public schools.

The African American Community OC will work closely with the Director of Programs to set and execute program strategies and goals within the areas of PPS-SF's Enrollment, Family Engagement, and Policy Programs.

Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco's services are citywide. The African American Community OC must:

  • Have good knowledge of the African American community and demographic trends in San Francisco.

  • Be able to work independently, while embodying the mission of PPS-SF to serve families across San Francisco.

  • Possess an exceptionally high level of personal responsibility.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Public School Enrollment Outreach and Training

  • Educate families about their public school options and the SFUSD enrollment process.

  • Provide one-on-one support and guidance to parents with applying to schools that are right for them.

  • Plan, promote, and present public school enrollment information to San Francisco's African American community with a focus on on-time enrollment into SFUSD schools.

  • Outreach to public health centers, public and private housing developments, preschools and home day care services, community centers, libraries, and other locations across San Francisco.

Family Engagement Program Facilitation

  • Proactively and responsively plan family engagement workshops designed to support parents and families in navigating SFUSD and their child’s school.

  • Coordinate, promote, and present PPS-SF Family Engagement curriculum that increases family participation at targeted public schools across San Francisco in support of African American students and their families.

  • Encourage family and parental involvement in their child's education by providing information, support, and guidance to families.

  • Build relationships with school administrators and staff to ensure alignment of the goals of school leadership with the expectations of the students and their families

  • Increase the number of families who are active participants of PPS-SF’s programs and online services.

Evaluation and Reporting

  • Keep accurate and consistent records of program activities.

  • Assist Director of Programs in monitoring impact of program by using data-driven program evaluation.

Collaboration

  • Represent PPS-SF at community events, meetings, and other relevant opportunities to build support for PPS-SF's mission.

  • Create opportunities to collaborate with other community, district, business, and city leaders.

  • Foster relationships with key nonprofit organizations, city agencies, and SFUSD personnel in support of African American students and families.

Policy

  • Stay current with SFUSD policies that affect African American students and families.

  • Engage parents and families with education policy as needed and appropriate.

Other Duties

  • Support communications and fundraising as needed.

Minimum Experience

  • High school diploma or GED

  • 3–5 years professional work experience

  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record

  • Ability to problem solve independently

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to navigate San Francisco’s diverse populations

  • Strong writing skills

  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills

  • Computer skills in Google Suite (Google Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Slides)

  • Familiarity with social media platforms including Twitter and Facebook

Preferred Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Working knowledge and experience of San Francisco Unified School District

  • Knowledge of San Francisco’s African American community

  • Experience working in a diverse, mission-driven workplace

  • Fluency in Spanish or Samoan

Additional Requirements

  • Consistent access to a car (Mileage is reimbursed.)

  • Willingness to use personal cell phone for work (Monthly stipend and Google number are provided.)

  • TB test clearance (If needed, PPS-SF will cover cost of testing upon offer of employment.)
