Get a flavor for what is happening at the Board of Education by browsing this recap of our live-tweet coverage of the April 14, 2020 Board of Education committee meeting.

The Board met via Zoom meeting. It was a long meeting but two key items of note:

  1. The Board weighed in on what to do about grading and graduation requirements in light of the current disruption. No decision was made, but several options were discussed. Many commissioners favored a system where all students (middle and high school) would receive a grade of A for the semester. Other options included a pass/no-pass system, a pass/ incomplete, and “A” /incomplete, or a continuation of letter grades. While many board members preferred the option to give all students an “A” they decided to wait to make a decision until better understanding what ramifications that might have on college admission eligibility as it does not align with guidance given by the UC system and the California Department of Education.

  2. A resolution was passed to support provision of trauma-informed, coordinated care to support students, families, educators, school staff and community organizations supporting schools. The resolution called for needs assessments to be made by the staff at every school-site over the next few weeks to make sure families and students are connected with available resources. It also calls for mental health supports for teachers and staff as well a creation of a formal plan by May 1 for summer services and protocols for returning to school.
