Enrollment fair: What did you miss?

Our Executive Director, Vanessa Marrero, partnered with SFUSD leadership to facilitate in-person enrollment sessions.  We want to be sure that you can get the general gist of what she shared and how we can support you and your family! First, Vanessa discussed the value of public education which is that public education serves as the foundation of our democracy, Community Accountability, Rigorous instruction and highly qualified teachers, and diversity=high outcomes for every learner. Our district has a plethora of choices in school programs including; Science, technology, engineering, and math programs, School library services, literacy and English language development, Dance, drama, music and visual and cultural arts, Social, emotional, nutrition, physical, and financial services. In fact, what more exciting is that our schools offer FIVE Really great things:

  1. High Standards: Next Generation Science standards across all SFUSD schools

  2. Dedicated, Qualified Teachers: Highest % of National Board-Certified Teachers in any urban district in CA, terminal degrees i.e., ED.D, JD, Ph.D.

  3. Small Class Sizes: 22:1 ratio in TK-3

  4. Many Options: Language immersion pathways, year-round school, Montessori, small & large community schools, career dual enrollment programs

  5. Great Programs: Blue Ribbon school programs, Adventures in Music, SF Opera, SF Ballet, California Partnership Academies

You see, School Choice is Your Choice!

We have pointers on choosing schools
Choosing a school is about four key things:

  1. Your values (Your unique child interests, developmental stages, proximity, extended learning experiences, school size)

  2. Your goals for your child, and what works for your family (Use the data you have on your phone, and calendar to ascertain your Family routines + schedules this will inform you on what works

  3. The facts. (Set your list on facts; Choose as many schools as will work for your family - at least 5 schools, place them in order of your preference on your application, List your attendance area school, and Balance your list. Stay away from Myths. Reminder: Listing only one or two schools does not help your chances of being assigned.

  4. There is no advantage to listing your schools in any other order.

  5. Not getting a school in the Main Round does not confer Round 2 advantage
