Student Assignment Updates + Share Your Input at our April 30 Annual Meeting
Recent staff presentations shed light on issues SFUSD’s Board of education must grapple as they reassess our current student assignment system
The Ad Hoc Student Assignment committee of the SFUSD board of education has been meeting monthly and hearing data updates and input from experts to help inform implementation of a resolution passed in December which requires the development of a recommendation for a revised student assignment policy.
MARCH: Review 2019 Assignment Data, Online Enrollment Pilot, Timeline for Student Assignment Policy Revise Recommendation
On March 18, the committee shared data from the most recent assignment period about choice patterns and assignment outcomes for families who submitted applications by the January deadline. There was also an update on the status of an online enrollment pilot program and a proposed timeline and scope for the process of recommending a revised student assignment policy. Board members pushed back a bit on the proposed timeline, expressing a desire to more the process more quickly.

APRIL: Discuss case studies from other districts (Boston, San Diego, Seattle, Berkeley), Look at models of possible redrawn elementary school attendance areas
On April 15, the committee met and heard from a Stanford graduate school researcher who did a deep dive into the goals and outcomes of assignment policies in several comparable school districts and also heard from demographers who modeled a couple of options for changes to the elementary school attendance areas that might better meet board priorities.
