The SFUSD Board of Education will hold a Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday December 4, 2018 to discuss the resolution “Developing a Community Based Student Assignment System” and hear an update on the new school proposed to be built in Mission Bay
At this meeting, the primary agenda item will be a discussion of the resolution “Developing a Community Based Student Assignment System for SFUSD” introduced by Commissioners Matt Haney, Stevon Cook, and Rachel Norton at the September 26, 2018 Board of Education Meeting. Commissioner Mark Sanchez has been added as a co-sponsor.
The resolution has been amended significantly since it was introduced. It no longer would necessarily end the “ALL lottery” assignment system but would instead “model and present different options for elementary schools [such as (1) an initial or “home” based assignment with choice of citywide or specialized options, (2) individualized choice based on a family’s home address, or (3) a zone based assignment within which they will have guaranteed access to a set of schools], indicating how well each model meets the Board’s goals for student assignment”;
At the meeting there will be a presentation by SFUSD staff and an opportunity for public comment.

There will also be an update on the planning process surrounding the proposed new school in Mission Bay. It is likely that results of a recent community input process wil be shared. You can see more information about the future school in Mission Bay here.
Public Comment
There is always an opportunity for public comment at school board meetings.
At regular meetings, speakers may speak to any item being voted on or may give general public comment during the time reserved for "Public Comment on General Matters." Speakers must sign up in advance, either by calling the board office at (415) 241-6493 or filling out a speaker card at the meeting and handing it to Esther Casco, the executive assistant to the board, who sits next to the podium. Speaker cards must be turned in before the agenda item being spoken to is officially "called."
At committee meetings, those wishing to speak may sign up in advance or simply approach the podium when the committee chair calls for public comment.
Members of the public are typically allowed two minutes to speak, but the time given may be shorter if there are a large number of speakers.
