Upcoming SFUSD Board Meetings

Tuesday night the SFUSD Board of Education holds its first regular meeting of the new school year.

Highlight: Commissioners will hear an update on the ongoing "Middle School Redesign" project and a petition will be introduced (no vote yet) to authorize a new KIPP TK-4 charter school in the Bayview district.

 Details:

  • The meeting will start with reports from Superintendent Vincent Matthews and student delegates from the Student Advisory Council.
  • The informational report on the Middle School Redesign initiative will include information on the process school leaders have undertaken to redesign elements of the middle school experience in SFUSD, design principles that have emerged and implementation that is underway. These slides provide additional information.
  • The board will vote on adoption of a new policy on Suicide Prevention, including staff awareness, discussion of coping skills, promotion of interrelatedness, parent/guardian education and crisis intervention and counselling. Find details of the policy here.
  • A resolution will be introduced asking the Board of Education to authorize a new PK-4 charter school run by KIPP Bay Area schools. There are already three KIPP schools in San Francisco: one middle school and two high schools. Here is a copy of the charter petition.

Public Comment

There is always an opportunity for public comment at school board meetings. At regular meetings, speakers may speak to any item being voted on or may give general public comment during the time reserved for "Public Comment on General Matters." Speakers must sign up in advance, either by calling the board office at (415) 241-6493 or filling out a speaker card at the meeting and handing it to Esther Casco, the executive assistant to the board who sits next to the podium. Speaker cards must be turned in before the agenda item being spoken to is officially "called." Members of the public are typically allowed two minutes to speak, but time given may be shorter if there are a large number of speakers.
