HOURS: This is a temporary position covering for maternity leave [January 2018- May 2018]; approximately 15-20 hours a week. Flexible hours. Evening and weekend work may be needed.

COMPENSATION: Competitive salary dependent upon experience and cell phone reimbursement.

Position Summary

The temporary Chinese Community Outreach Coordinator (OC) impacts the engagement of San Francisco families in the Chinese community by educating, engaging, and connecting parents, families and community members in support of improving San Francisco's public education system. The temporary Chinese Community OC’s  priority is supporting parents, families and community members to become active agents for excellent education opportunities for all children in San Francisco's public schools.

The temporary Chinese Community OC will work primarily in two areas:

  1. Enrollment: Educate parents on how to navigate the SFUSD student assignment process for elementary (kindergarten-5), middle and high school.

  2. Family Engagement: Strengthen family-school partnerships through the facilitation of PPS-SF's program activities such as school governance presentations, parent leadership clubs, one-on-one coaching and leading occasional field trips.

The temporary Chinese Community OC will report to and work closely with the Director of Programs to execute program strategies and goals within the areas of PPS-SF's Enrollment, Family Engagement, and Policy Programs.

Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco's services are city-wide.  The temporary Chinese Community OC must:

  • be multilingual in Cantonese, Mandarin and English.

  • have good knowledge of the Chinese community and demographic trends in San Francisco.

  • be able to work independently, while embodying the mission of PPS-SF to serve families across San Francisco.

  • possess an exceptionally high level of personal responsibility.

  • know how to use WeChat, a social media platform for communication needs.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Enrollment Outreach and Training:
  • Educate parents about their public school options and the enrollment process.

  • Use WeChat to announce enrollment deadlines and important information to families

  • Provide support and guidance to assist parents with choosing a school that is right for them. Provide one-on-one support as needed in person, over the phone or over WeChat.

  • Plan, promote, and present PPS-SF enrollment-related events in San Francisco.

  • Outreach to preschools, schools, community centers, libraries, and other locations across San Francisco.

Family Engagement Program Facilitation:

  • Responsively plan family engagement workshops with Director of Programs to support parents and families in navigating SFUSD and their child’s school.

  • Coordinate, promote, and present PPS-SF Family Engagement curriculum in Chinese and English to increase School Site Council and English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) participation at targeted public schools across San Francisco.

  • Encourage family and parental involvement in their child's education by providing information, support, and guidance to families.

  • Build relationships with school administrators and staff to ensure cohesive  alignment is found between the goals of a school's leader and the expectations of the students and their families.

Evaluation & Reporting:

  • Keep accurate and consistent records of program activities.

  • Assist Director of Programs in monitoring impact of program by using data driven program evaluation.

Networking:

  • Represent PPS-SF at community events, meetings and other relevant opportunities to build support for PPS-SF's mission and create opportunities to collaborate with other community, district, business, and city leaders.

  • Increase the number of families who are active participants of PPS-SF’s programs and online services.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

  • 3-5 years professional work experience .

  • Consistent access to a car (mileage reimbursed).

  • Valid driver’s license; clean driving record.

  • Ability to independently problem solve.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to navigate San Francisco’s diverse populations.

  • Strong writing skills in Chinese and English.

  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills in Chinese and English.

  • Experience working in a diverse, mission-driven workplace.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

  • Current or former San Francisco public school parent or caregiver preferred

  • Working knowledge and experience of San Francisco Unified School District strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge of San Francisco’s Chinese community strongly preferred.
