Upcoming SFUSD Board of Education Meetings

Two meetings this week for the SFUSD Board of Education. Tuesday is a Committee of the Whole meeting and Wednesday the Budget and Business Services Committee Meets.

Committee of the Whole Meeting: Tuesday October 3 @ 6PM in the Board Room

Agenda for the meeting here

Committee of the Whole meetings, referred to sometimes as "COW"s, are an opportunity for the Board of Education commissioners to hear an in-depth report on a topic of special interest or an issue that would normally be referred to more than two committees.

The topic of discussion tonight is: "The County Safety Net"

  • County schools serve students not served by the district: students who have been expelled, detained, or at high risk of not graduating from a district school

  • County schools in San Francisco include:

    • Civic Center Middle and High Schools

    • Woodside Learning Center

    • Log Cabin Ranch

    • Hilltop Special Services Center

  • Last year a report to the board on San Francisco county schools identified some concerns about the current program offerings and opportunities to better meet student needs

Budget and Business Services Committee: Wednesday October 5 @ 6PM in the Board Room.

Agenda for the meeting here

The topic of the meeting will be the "weighted student formula"

  • Budget office staff will present on the system SFUSD uses to distribute funds it receives from the local, state and federal sources to each school in the district.

  • The system looks at the average number of students attending at each school (not just enrolled) and also certain characteristics of the students and schools

  • This meeting will be a great opportunity for all families to gain understanding of the SFUSD budget process and may be of particular interest to those participating in School Site Councils (SSCs), or English Learner Advisory Committees (ELACs)

Public Comment

There is always an opportunity for public comment at school board meetings. At committee meetings public comment does not typically require advance sign up. The committee chair will call for public comment on a particular topic before commissioners begin discussion of the topic. Members of the public interested in speaking simply approach the podium when called. Speakers are typically allowed two minutes to address the board, but time given may be shorter if there are a large number of speakers.

Recording and Live Coverage of Meetings

You can access recordings of regular and committee meetings.

Video recordings of regular meetings (not available for committee meetings)

Audio recordings of committee meetings (click where it says "audio recording," under the meeting agenda)

Regular board meetings are also broadcast live on KALWSFGOVTV2, and via live webcast.
